What Is RO-RO Transportation?

It’s the name of the sea ship shortened from the first two letters of the words Roll on and Roll off. English: Means the transport of wheeled vehicles. It provides road vehicles from one place to another by sea. It has been in the world since 1851, and today it is a widely used mode of transport worldwide.

Ro-Ro ports allow for convenient passage between countries and generally allow easier loading. Vehicles transported on Ro-Ro ships are loaded on board at the Ro-Ro port and unloaded at the destination. For this reason, the berthing points of these ships are chosen as ro-ro ports instead of ordinary ports.

With the development of technology, China’s Ro-Ro ports are of great importance for vehicles shipped from China or vehicles that transition to China.

The search for public transport by road has brought many negative effects, especially in places where vehicles are impassable or very difficult.

VEHICLE CAPACITY OF RO-RO VESSELS

Ro-Ro ships are used for the transportation of production wheeled vehicles. Therefore, the cargo capacity of the ships is higher than the standard ships. The Ro-Ro ships attract attention with their larger capacity than standard ferries and have different sizes according to different logistics companies.

If we look at the capacity of a general Ro-Ro ship, about 300 to 500 standard passenger cars can be loaded on the Ro-Ro ship. The Ro-Ro ships, which take up more space than passenger vehicles, can load about 80 to 100 trucks. Although the payload capacity of a given vehicle varies between Ro-Ro vessels and different manufacturers for different purposes, on average all Ro-Ro ships have similar payload capacities.

LOADING VEHICLES ON RO-RO VESSELS

When loading a vehicle on a Ro-Ro vessel, the driver of the vehicle must be in the port area. Start shipping at the date and time of receipt of the port clearance. When loading a vehicle on a Ro-Ro vessel, in some cases only trailers are loaded on the vessel. There are also semi-trailers and trucks with trailers on board.

How to load a vehicle on a Ro-Ro ship and what parts of a long and large vehicle, such as a truck, depend entirely on the agreement between the shipping company and the shipping company. Like trucks, the loading of vehicles is carried out according to the agreement between the carrier and the shipping company.

After the Ro-Ro ship approaches the loading port, open the vessel’s warehouse first. The vehicles requested on the ship are loaded on the vessel in a predetermined order. Ro-Ro ships usually have covers on the back. Thanks to these covers and the additional sections added to the vessel, special equipment or frigo transport are also possible.

BENEFITS OF RO-RO TRANSPORT

Ro-Ro transport is one of the most important modes of transport in international transport. Especially when other transport methods are used for the transportation of many wheeled vehicles, the cost increases to very high values, the progress of the process is very slow and problems are experienced. However, loading and transporting vehicles on Ro-Ro ships is easier than other methods. So what are the benefits of Ro-Ro transport and what advantages does Ro-Ro vehicle transport provide to the company?

  • It is much easier to load vehicles on Ro-Ro ships than other alternative modes of transportation. Therefore, Ro-Ro transportation can save the company time compared to other methods.
  • The safety of Ro-Ro transport vehicles is ensured by ships along the way. At the same time, Ro-Ro ships are the first choice as a more reliable alternative to road and similar methods.
  • All vehicles transported on Ro-Ro ships are unlikely to be damaged by external factors. However, in vehicles transported by other means, the probability of any jolts or scratches in similar conditions is quite high.
  • Loading the vehicle on the Ro-Ro ship is carried out using equipment developed directly for this job. It is therefore easier to load and transport vehicles on board. Roll-on and Roll-off transport saves the company time and cost during the loading process.
  • The Ro-Ro shipping port is designed for the direct transfer of cargo by Ro-Ro ships. Therefore, loading in these ports is much easier.
  • The loading of vehicles on the Ro-Ro ship is much shorter than other methods. The advantage of Ro-Ro transport is often to save time for companies.
  • In the transport operations carried out on the Ro-Ro ship, the transportation of larger-capacity vehicles is carried out with a single ship. Transporting vehicles of the same capacity by road or rail will cause companies to pay higher shipping costs.
  • With the development of technology, the number of companies that carry out Ro-Ro transportation continues to increase. At this point, companies can choose from thousands of different company options to get the prices and services they want.

VARIOUS ADVANTAGES OF RO-RO TRANSPORT

The roll-on-roll transport system has many advantages and enables the transportation of goods in a practical and fast manner. The number of Ro-Ro transport routes is also increasing. Due to the fast transportation speed, many regions, especially Europe, can be organized and new routes can be added.

There are also advantages in terms of operating costs as the cargo loaded in the port does not need to be reprocessed. At this point, there is an economic advantage among the advantages provided by Ro-Ro transportation. Thanks to its practicality and speed, it can prevent loads from staying in the port unnecessarily. Goods arrive quickly by ship, without having to wait too long in the port. In Ro-Ro transport, it is not possible to pay various fees as on the road. Avoid crossings, borders and various traffic problems in various countries abroad. This mode of transport does not have long lines at border ports, so it can allow goods to reach their destination relatively quickly.
